It’s really exciting to visit an eatery that doesn’t look like an eatery from the outside. However, when you enter the Shampan restaurant, one is met with deep darkwood decor in lofty surroundings which includes a lounge with a welcoming fireplace. Extremely apt for those cold and wintry evenings where you fancy indulgent food in a plush backdrop with plenty of spice. And Shampan doesn’t disappoint.
Set in Westerham in Kent, the Shampan group of restaurants has a firm foothold in Southern England with this the fourth restaurant introducing a new modern Indian A la Carte menu. The food encompasses local ingredients from the area wherever possible. The person heading the kitchen where it all happens is Executive Chef Sadek Miah who along with the Shampan crew have come up with a selection of dishes to celebrate the ‘Garden of England’.
The starters are a breath of fresh air that include Freshwater King Prawns with Smoked Garlic and Dill Leaves, Tilapia with a Coriander and Kokum Crust. Kokum is known as mangosteen and is a sour tasting fruit similar to the flavours of tamarind that’s found in the western regions of India and is used extensively in Goan and Maharashtrian cuisine. The The Kentish Lamb Chops hark back to the traditional flavours of the North with a hint of mint and black cardamom.
For the main course the Punjabi Red Spiced Chicken Breast with sauteed vegetables adds a twist to traditional murgh makhani and the Kerala Spiced King Prawns have the fresh flavours of curry leaves and coconut. The piquancy of the Hyderabadi Spiced Baby Aubergines with Tomato and Tamarind compliment the simple breads such as the Laccha Paratha. If you’re a fan of Biryanis, opt for the Bombay Masala Lamb which has rich Basmati infused with luxurious warming spices.
The desserts are as indulgent as the main course dishes using local ingredients combined with sweet spices such as saffron and green cardamom and if you’re spoilt for choice you could choose a taster dessert with three mini options on a platter.
With an interesting spin on notable dishes, Shampan is a special place for when you want to savour that special moment and what better place for that occasion than at one of the top 100 Best Indian Restaurants in the whole of the UK.
