make_up_smallAre we happy with growing old gracefully? Apparently not. You just have to step into department stores or shops and confront the wide array of anti-ageing eye creams , cleansers and moisturisers stacked on shelves. So it seems the evidence is clear; we prefer to remain youthful for longer. Spending hundreds of pounds on anti-ageing creams with empty promises of making you look ten years younger is not the only answer. Just by knowing what to eat, it’s never too late to adopt a healthy, anti-ageing diet.

First tip is to cut down your intake of saturated fat. Butter, ghee, coconut oil, cream, cheese, red meat, chocolate and anything that contains these ingredients such as ready packed supermarket meals, take-aways, biscuits, cakes, sweets and pastries are all full of saturated fat. Cutting down on these foods will not only do wonders for your waistline, you will also notice over time your skin pores are smaller and the texture of your skin is smooth.

avocados_small_thumbSo what kind of fats will keep our wrinkles at bay? Monounsaturated fat, in the form of avocados is excellent for anti-ageing and with its vitamin E properties, can reduce the level of bad cholesterol in the body. Avocados are also rich in potassium, so helps prevent fluid retention and high blood pressure.

Get to know and love those super antioxidants; berries in all shapes and sizes. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, acai berries, cherries all contain powerful antioxidants so if you’re someone who scatters a few of these juicy berries over your granola in the morning, you’re on a winning streak. Plums, apples, carrots, red bell peppers or capsicums and vegetables like kale and spinach, alfalfa sprouts and broccoli are all age-defying too.

By increasing your intake of oily fish; salmon, mackerel and tuna and white fish and white meat like skinless chicken breast you are boosting your intake of essential fatty acids (EFAs), omegas 3,6, and 9. These EFAs are crucial to your anti-ageing diet.

If you’re not a fan of eating fish or meat, there are excellent omega rich oils, such as Udo’s Choice, or Neal's Yard Beauty Oil which can be drizzled over salads, or mixed with protein shakes or drinks. For women in particular, a healthy consumption of EFAs will support weight management and the production of hormones, maintain the liver, kidneys, adrenal and thyroid glands and sustain beautiful hair, skin and nails.
